In 2020, we commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ journey to America, where they established the first sustained English colony in New England: Plymouth Plantation. The Leiden American Pilgrim Museum tells the story of these religious refugees with a collection of furnishings and objects from their time. This video conference will retrace the different steps of their adventure and especially focus on the now legendary 1620 Mayflower voyage that we are reminded of this year. Why did the Pilgrims leave England? Why did they choose Leiden and what were their lives like there? Why decide to sail to America years after, and how were their lives changed in the so-called “New World”? This presentation I hope will answer these questions and more, with the visual support of some carefully selected objects, while leaving room for any further conversation that might arise.

The presentation will be given by Sarah Moine, the assistant of director Jeremy Bangs at the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum; she is in charge of the museum’s visits and participates in the research conducted by the institution.

All proceeds from this talk will go to benefit the Leiden Pilgrim Museum which is in desperate need of funds during this lockdown period.
