    craft cake

Chat, Craft & Cake is now meeting at the clubhouse, but the in person group size is limited.  You must RSVP with Suzanne Dundas, at chatcraftcake@awcthehague.org, to reserve your spot.

Let’s get creative! The AWC will be open to all crafters. If you’ve been looking for an open space large enough to lay out that king-size quilt, or need more table space to organize your photo albums or scrapbooks, or just need an excuse to stitch, pack up those supplies and bring them to the Clubhouse so you can chat with fellow AWC Members and visitors while you work. You might even be able to pick up some suggestions from a fresh pair of eyes. Each week a different Member will bring a cake - tried and true, or experimental.

Questions? Contact Suzanne Dundas at chatcraftcake@awcthehague.org

Meets every Tuesday except holidays. RSVP is required during coronavirus times.

Whether you count your steps or just want to walk with friends, the Monday morning Walkie Talkies is a fun and healthy way to start the week.  The group meets in front of the AWC Clubhouse before heading out promptly at 9:30 a.m. to walk to various destinations in the area, usually racking up 10,000 steps along the way.

There is a WhatsApp group to keep up-to-date on where we might be walking that morning and who is attending.  So no RSVP is necessary, but please contact Emily van Eerten, walkietalkies@awcthehague.org, if you want to be added to the WhatsApp group or have any questions about WT!

Mah Jongg is a popular tile based game of Chinese origin.   This exciting game is somewhat similar to the card game, Rummy.  We will play the international version with 144 tiles with no scoring.   Be prepared for a game of strategy and luck that will quickly become addictive!  We will begin with an introduction of the basic rules and hands.  All beginners and experienced players are welcome at any time:  once the group is established, beginners can join and learn from doing.  Please join us as this game is simply good fun.

Four hundred years ago, the English Separatists called the Pilgrims set sail to America. It is the occasion to be reminded of their story as well as their contemporaries and learn about the world they lived in. This tour offers to discover the city of Leiden, where the Pilgrims arrived as refugees in 1609, and its unique environment: home of the first University of the country (1575), of a flourishing textile industry, of printing houses and of many foreign immigrants looking for religious freedom. In the seventeenth century, Leiden was one of the largest cities of the Low Countries. Much of the urban landscape today reflects the cultural, academic, and scientific riches of the city as well as the daily life in the "Golden Age". Wandering around with the curator of the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, you will hear about the Pilgrims' journey, the monumental churches, the old and quaint houses, and the secrets of the city.  Because of Covid-19 restrictions it will not be possible to allow the group into the museum.  However everyone is welcome to book a visit online in advance at https://pilgrim-museum.sollidd.com/  Museum entrance fee is 6.50 and is not included in the walking tour price.

The tour will end at the Waag restaurant, Aalmarkt 21, where an afternoon drink and snacks can be enjoyed at your own expense.

The Oranjehotel was the nickname for the Scheveningen prison during the Second World War. Here, the Germans detained over 25,000 people for interrogation and prosecution. A diverse group from all corners of the Netherlands had broken German laws: mostly resistance fighters, but also Jews and Jehova’s Witnesses, as well as people who were detained due to an economic misdemeanour, like black market traders. Already during the war, the complex was called ‘Oranjehotel’. It was an ode to the resistance fighters who were locked up there.

Among the prisoners in the Oranjehotel were well-known people like the ‘Soldaat van Oranje’ (‘Soldier of Orange’) Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, Rudolph Cleveringa, Titus Brandsma, George Maduro, Pim Boellaard, Henri Pieck, Heinz Polzer (Drs. P.) and Corrie ten Boom, but also countless others. Some were released; others were deported to other prisons or camps or executed on the nearby Waalsdorpervlakte. We tell their stories of fear, hope, faith and love for the fatherland here in the National Monument Oranjehotel. We show how vulnerable freedom really is, and which choices people make when injustice, repression and persecution control society.

**Please note that this will not be a Guided Tour, but registration is required.  The group will meet at 1 p.m. for an introduction and a short film presented by museum staff; then there will be free time to wander the museum via audio guide.  At 3 p.m. the group will gather for coffee and cake in the museum café and talk about what we have seen so far. Those interested in exploring the museum longer can continue to do so.

If you cannot attend in person, you can vote by mail by contacting our Parliamentarian, Georgia Regnault, at parliamentarian@awcthehague.org before the meeting.

The AWC Book Clubs are open to all readers.  The Daytime Book Club meets on the fourth Thursday of every month (with a few exceptions) at the AWC clubhouse.  You may choose to drop in once or twice or attend every month.  Please join us!  One member of the Book Group shares a snack and leads the discussion and the AWC provides coffee.

Please contact committee chair, Teresa Mahoney, awcthehague.bookclub@gmail.com if you'd like to join.
